Burkina Faso : Internally displaced families received essential household items and hygiene kits thanks to ECHO supported actions

Insecurity has led to the displacement of more than 838,000 people, 61 per cent of whom are children, and the vast majority are accommodated in host families or in displacement sites lacking adequate access to clean water, hygiene and basic sanitation.

Like Fatoumata, a mother of eight children who escaped from an attack of non-state armed group in her village located in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso. She said “the future of her children is her main concern”.

The family arrived in Yalgo in May 2019. “I still remember. It was during the month of Ramadan. When we arrived, we first took shelter in a primary school before being welcomed into a family’s house not far from the school”, she relates.

They fled empty-handed. Thanks to the funding of the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid (ECHO), UNICEF delivered 954 aid kits to more than 5,000 internally displaced people in Yalgo. They received essential household items, including tarpaulins, mosquito nets, water buckets, soap, kitchen items and menstrual kits.

“The household items I just received is an unexpected gift. It will not only improve our living conditions, but will also allow us to keep and preserve our dignity. I am grateful and I thank God. We hope to go back to our village but we will do so only if it is safe. But we have faith that the situation will get better”, says Fatoumata.

Thanks to the donation of ECHO, 1,535 families benefited from 2,389 kits of essential households’ items while 2,195 other families received 3,049 hygiene kits, in the Centre-Nord (including Yalgo), Est and Nord regions.
